History: Nico Minoru is a young girl with magical powers and the leader of the Runaways.
Every year, Nico's parents would join five other couples in a "charity event." One year, Nico and the other kids decided to spy on their parents. Nico was shocked to discover her father speaking a strange enchantment, and after witnessing the murder of an innocent girl by their parents ("The Pride"), Nico joined the others in running away from their parents.
While on the run, Nico reencounters her parents. Her mother, wielding a large staff with a ball at the end ("the Staff of One"), reveals that she and Nico's father were dark wizards. She then attempts to jam the Staff into Nico's chest. Nico's body, curiously, absorbs it. After she is later cut by Dale Yorkes' samurai battle-axe, the Staff re-emerges from her chest, prompting Nico to use the phrase "Freeze", and freeze Stacey Yorkes. Nico was discovered to be a witch, and the Staff would only emerge when she bled. Sometime after running off, Nico took on the name Sister Grimm to escape the name her parents gave her. After team leader Alex outs himself as a mole and was defeated along with the Pride, Nico is accepted as the group's leader, but she is quite reluctant to accept herself as a commanding figure.
Equipment:
Staff of One - This ancient magical item has become a part of Nico. She can call it forth by shedding blood and reciting, "When blood is shed, let the Staff of One emerge." The staff appears out of her chest, passing through her skin and clothing without harm. Once summoned, the staff used to work for anyone. But as evidenced by the confrontation with Val Rhymin's magician, the Staff has recently developed the ability to defend itself in a violent manner. Nico can cast spells by invoking painful memories, thinking of an effect, and giving the spell a name. There are no "standard" spells; in fact, casting any spell a second time produces an unpredictable (and usually undesirable) effect. Nico's spells can affect the elements, time and/or space, matter and/or energy, light, biological processes, and mental processes, and can apparently summon creatures from other dimensions; in short, the staff allows Nico to do anything she can imagine, short of raising the dead. After the staff has expended a certain amount of power, it disappears inside Nico again. The Staff has been recently updated into a version of the Witchbreaker's Staff, Nico's magical powers considerably augmented.
Powers:
Blood Magic - Nico has magical aptitude, but she did not receive formal training. So far she has relied on the Staff of One to work magic. After her encounter with Witchbreaker, her abilities were augmented so that she can create smaller magical effects without the aid of the Staff. She can freely float, although this ability is not as useful as actual flight which requires a spell. She can cast spells to change her surroundings, such as transforming the inside of a building.
Flight - She can fly with the Staff of One.
Magical Telekinesis - She can magically levitate and move objects with her mind.
Magical Teleportation - She can open portals to teleport people to other places.
Skill: Although quite a competent magician, Nico is still learning the craft. She has sought the guidance of aging magician Jasper Dowd in order to reach her full potential. She is also a very good tuba player. And although she's a natural leader, she is constantly afraid of making a mistake that would cost the lives of her team, the only friends she ever had.
Trivia (Optional):
-Nico suffers from depression and has suicidal tendencies. Constantly running away and the haunting memory of seeing the murder of an innocent girl have played a factor on this.
Sample of how you'll play this character:
Rodimus Prime (in his human form) was sitting on a bench. He saw a girl with a dark outfit and make-up. She seemed to be troubled. He decided to talk to her.
"You okay, kid?" asked Rodimus.
Nico just looked at him silently before uttering in a rather soft tone.
"Depends on your definition of okay..." said Nico. Her tone was soft but pained.
"I know we don't know each other... but maybe I could help." said Rodimus.
"Help... a girl who constantly runs away from everything? Who is too afraid to lose people she cares about? Who hates herself for being born?" uttered Nico.
Rodimus looked down. This girl was going through the same problems he was going through. However, unlike him, she was young and could learn to trust herself as she kept maturing, whereas he felt he had done too many bad things to ever trust himself. However, he could give this girl some advice so she wouldn't end up like him.
"Running away is tough... you always have to keep watching your back... and if you have people you care about, you have to watch their backs as well... but it starts wearing you down... you start becoming restless, paranoid and you feel you're going insane..." said Rodimus, speaking from the heart. "But... you can give yourself the energy to protect the ones you love... when you are fighting to protect others, banish thinking... don't expect anything... just focus on that battle..."
"But... what about winning or losing?" asked Nico.
"Don't think about that... one can't think of victory without considering defeat, and that distracts you from what you must do." said Rodimus.
"And what is this that I must do?" asked Nico.
"You have to do what fate tells you to do... one's inner burden... for those who desert their obligation are already defeated." said Rodimus as he looked down. His expression seemed weary and defeated. There was truth in his words, he had been defeated and hated by many, and he couldn't let this girl suffer the same fate.
Nico got up and looked at him, noticing that this man seemed to know what he was talking about.
"Listen... I dunno who you are... but I'll... think about what you told me..." said Nico. "Thanks... for the advice."
Nico then walked out and went on her way. Rodimus just sat there. He had managed to give someone advice... but he then starts tearing up. If only there had been someone to give him this kind of advice when he was a boy... then he wouldn't have suffered so much in his life and maybe he could have protected his loved ones better. At least this young girl now had a chance, given by a selfless person who had made his mistakes, which haunt him to this very day.
